I am almost through my first year of teaching. What a roller coaster ride! I have been through the entire spectrum of emotions and my brain is full of names, faces and art which makes it worth it at the end of the day. This is soooo much better than sitting at a desk for 9 hours a day. I wish I had made the change sooner. so if you have a moment visit the page for student artwork and lesson plans, I have something new to show you!

This week I spent observing my elementary school placement. OK well I didn’t observe very long, I was excited to help my new teacher and the kids are great! We see the entire school population in one week and there is plenty of planning time. I’ll be writing my first lessons this weekend and may start to deliver them next week depending on how things wrap up with the current plans. Will have more to report next week.

Well I finished at Booker T without a hitch. I had a great review from Dr Laws and from Ms Haywood. I really enjoyed my time there even though I had the flu and then an ear and sinus infection there at the end. My lesson plans were a success due to the amazing feedback the Ms Haywood provided me. We went over them almost daily until they were immaculate. Ms Haywood is an excellent mentor. When I teach this lesson again I will keep it as is, it went so well and the kids were so excited about getting to work on their art. It was personal to them and it reflected in their active engagement with the piece. I will make sure to again have meaningful work for them to complete when they were finishing up for the day. I hope to work in a secondary school, I really enjoyed the ability to really be involved in the art and having the students for 90 minutes 2/3 times a week. I am proud of the lessons I deliverd, I feel the students learned valuable information not only about themselves but about the world around them.

So far I have to say that my objectives are being met. The Intro students understood about the color wheel and the intensity and value scales I had them paint. I graded these and for the most part I had a B+ average for those who actually turned in their work.

I did have to make a change in the mask lesson because they were finishing up the mache process really fast and one class had like 20 minutes of down time where they had nothing to do. That was scary. I found a scholastic art for the other two classes on African Art. The next time I teach this lesson I would like to get into the symbolism alot more deeply. I really have to work on embracing the warm up period at the beginning of class. The thing about it is when these kids are in the midst of working they know what to do and want to just do it. They don’t seem to appreciate the ten minute warm up and I think they see it as busy work.

I think Ms. Haywood is GREAT! We spend a little time every day talking about my lesson plans and my approach. She has a lot of knowledge and would be an excellent mentor for a new teacher. She has been integral to the success of my lesson plans and her feedback is amazing.

We had a field trip to VCU and the Holocaust museum this week, the kids were great, of course they were hand picked but nevertheless it went really well. I took care of them on the bus and had a handout for them to fill in while they watched a movie about a survivor. I learned alot myself about the college and the holocaust. I think I’ll be applying to VCU for their graduate program, it seems they do alot locally for the art teachers in the area over the summer.

I have to say that anytime is fine for stopping by the classroom. I think I’ll be getting observed by the school administration this week. I’m really proud of how the mask lesson is going. People who grumbled going into it are really getting some good results, I think they have surprised themselves.
